Creative Music Education x Values Education Course Series: To be Felt and Appreciated – A Graduation Gift for Myself

Overview

A series of lessons are designed comprising of music composing and value education-based experiential learning. The lessons aimed at letting Primary 6 students create a graduation gift for themselves. Students make use of the app, GarageBand, to create a musical piece, guided by the teaching pedagogy of ‘Learning by doing’, to express their feelings. After finishing their masterpiece, students presented their learning experience through spoken and written sharing, reinforcing the connection between their pieces and the expression and rationale behind their creations. Their works are shown on Padlet, providing further learning opportunities for fellow classmates to appreciate their work.

Through engaging in musical composition and ‘Learning by doing’, students were provided with the space and opportunity to create different styles of music of their own by channelling their personal experiences and creativity. It was a surprise with how much individuality was shown through their work. Students were required to write a caption to describe their masterpiece to train their high-order thinking skills. Meanwhile, the task allowed them to accept perfections and imperfections. By posting their pieces on Padlet and commenting on each other’s work, a positive learning atmosphere was created, helping them develop positive values, such as being appreciative.
