Using Chinese Culture as the Backbone for Promoting Values Education

Overview

The Education Bureau has attached great importance to developing students' moral character, supporting them in cultivating proper values and promoting their whole-person development to align with the country’s primary responsibility of cultivating values and nurturing people. The elements of values are deeply rooted in Chinese culture, which has a long history, and is rich and diverse. Learning Chinese classics not only strengthens students' sense of national identity but also nurtures their passion for Chinese culture. Through the ‘Mainland and Hong Kong Teacher Exchange and Collaboration Programme’ (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Programme’), teachers from both places could exchange ideas and collaborate to explore strategies for promoting values education and cultivating students' proper values and positive attitudes towards life both within and beyond the classroom.

Considering their own school contexts, schools participating in the ‘Programme’ planned their curriculum around the learning of Chinese classics and values education. They formulated relevant research topics, such as using values as the theme to link up elements of Chinese classics in the curricula; providing diversified strategies to enhance teaching effectiveness and infuse values education into Chinese classics to imbue students with proper conduct; and comprehensively fostering proper values and attitudes in students through connecting classroom learning with real-life experiences both within and beyond the classroom.

Participants of this seminar will:
1. understand strategies to promote values education;
2. know how to use Chinese classics in primary and secondary schools to cultivate virtues and instil the spirit of our distinguished traditional culture; and
3. understand the role of Chinese teachers in promoting values education
