Technology and Language Teaching

AI in Education Theatre

Overview

The language teaching landscape has been undergoing fast changes since the advent of digital technologies. The ubiquity of digital genres such as podcasts and videos provides new possibilities for language teachers in terms of materials design and pedagogy. Furthermore, the emergence of Generative AI technology continues to revolutionise language teaching in unprecedented ways. In light of these changes, the seminar has two aims: first, to introduce the background of such changes based on the latest research findings, and second, to provide a ‘walkthrough’ for language teachers on how to incorporate audio and video-based technologies in language teaching materials. Recognising the growing significance of GenAI in language teaching and learning, the seminar looks to the future and discusses the potential of GenAI in shaping the development of audio and video-based materials for language teaching.

The two speakers from the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University each have extensive experience in implementing and researching technology in language teaching. The seminar is a result of the various research outputs and teaching experiences that the speakers have accumulated. The seminar is based on the content of a book in preparation which addresses technology in language teaching.

Participants of this seminar will:
1. gain insights into the latest research findings on the integration of audio and video-based technologies, along with GenAI in language teaching;
2. acquire strategies for designing, developing, and producing audio and video-based language teaching materials; and
3. develop a balanced perspective on the opportunities and challenges associated with incorporating GenAI in language teaching
