Interdisciplinary Design for National Education: Chinese Local Tour Guide

Innovation Classroom

Overview

In this open lesson, the speaker will introduce a teaching design that adopts the thematic learning theory and uses the scenario of ‘CHINESE tour guide’ as the entry point. It organically integrates multiple subjects, such as Chinese, General Studies (Humanities), Arts, and Information Technology, allowing natural connections between the subjects to form a diversified teaching strategy. Corresponding national education is carried out at different time periods. The overall teaching is implemented with the objectives of ‘knowledge’, ‘emotions’, and ‘actions’. The teaching design starts from the knowledge input in General Studies followed by the teaching of ‘speaking leads to writing’ in Chinese and the creation of Chinese ink painting in Visual Arts, and finally the design includes the display of the final products using Information Technology. Other school-based activities can also be enriched in the form of activities to supplement the relevant national education. Both in and out-of-class scenarios are created to realise a whole-school participatory teaching model.

The theme-based teaching design can provide students with a comprehensive and in-depth learning experience. By role-playing as local Chinese tour guides, students not only enhance their interest in China's geographical environment and historical culture, but also develop their language expression skills to become professional tour guides, thereby enhancing their knowledge and identification with the motherland. The course integrates traditional Chinese arts, expanding students' artistic literacy and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Combining information technology to design virtual reality displays demonstrates its innovativeness and practicality. This teaching design is enriching, cultivating students' overall abilities in cross-cultural exchange, and achieving curriculum integration and holistic development.

Participants of this open lesson will understand:
1. how to design cross-disciplinary national education curriculum in Primary 5;
2. how departments collaborate to provide additional teaching and learning time for students and implement national education through diverse strategies; and
3. the instructional design concept of knowing, feeling, and acting.
