Chinese Adaptive Reading: A Case Study of SmartReading

AI in Education Theatre

Overview

Reading is the foundation of learning, making effective assessment and diagnosis of reading abilities both urgent and necessary. The 'SmartReading Adaptive Reading Platform,' developed by National Taiwan Normal University, utilises the AI-based computerised adaptive test ‘Diagnostic Assessment of Chinese Competence (DACC)’ to accurately measure students' reading levels. It matches students' reading abilities with the difficulty levels of books to provide suitable reading texts and recommended reading lists. By recording students' reading progress and evaluation results, the platform assists teachers in adjusting teaching strategies to implement personalised instruction. Ultimately, it aims to cultivate reading literacy based on students' abilities and interests, achieving the goal of differentiated instruction and fostering a love for reading.

The 'SmartReading Adaptive Reading Platform’ is currently the only system globally capable of assessing students' reading abilities and analysing the difficulty of Chinese texts. Through its unique three-step intelligent reading process-reading assessment, recommended reading lists, and reading plans—combined with AI-driven automated summary grading, it has assisted tens of thousands of teachers in enhancing reading instruction. The system is currently utilised by over 750 public, private, and international schools worldwide, with nearly 350,000 users to date.

Participants of this seminar will understand:
1. the concept and principles of adaptive reading deeply;
2. how the SmartReading Adaptive Reading Platform enhances students' reading literacy and motivation; and
3. successful cases of SmartReading adaptive reading to boost teachers' confidence and motivation in promoting adaptive reading.
