Nurturing Children's Exploratory Spirit and Problem Solving Skills through Educational Multimedia Resources
Early Childhood Education Theatre
Overview
One of the curriculum aims suggested by the Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide (2017) is to foster in children an interest in learning, an inquisitive mind and eagerness to explore. Based on this concept, the Curriculum Resources Section of the Education Bureau has developed a variety of theme-based Educational Multimedia (EMM) resources, such as manipulatives, picture books, storytelling props, etc., for kindergartens. Kindergarten teachers can make use of these EMM resources to design interesting and exploratory learning activities to develop children’s problem solving skills and exploratory spirit.
The Curriculum Resources Section collaborated with several kindergartens to explore ways of using EMM resources effectively in their theme-based exploratory learning activities. The outcomes were encouraging. Through the well-designed exploratory and problem solving activities, children’s learning motivation and interest were enhanced. They had gained a deeper understanding of the themes/concepts and developed proper values and attitudes through the activities.
Through this seminar, the participants could:
1.Learn to design theme-based exploratory learning activities using EMM resources to develop children’s problem solving skills and exploratory spirit;
2.Learn more about EDB EMM resources for kindergartens; and
3.Try out some of the functions of the EDB EMM website and learn to find suitable learning and teaching resources from the website to implement the school-based curriculum.
