Brain-based Emotion Coaching Parenting Programme

Early Childhood Education Theatre

Overview

The programme innovatively integrates three components: brain facts, emotion coaching skills, and caregivers’ mindful self-compassion. Its objective is not only to enhance parents’ ability to respond to children’s difficult emotions but also to put a balanced focus on nurturing the emotional well-being of both parents and children.

In collaboration with Dr Kathy Shum, Associate Profession of the Department of Psychology at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the programme effectiveness study was conducted. The programme was found to be empirically effective in alleviating parenting stress, enhancing emotion coaching skills of parents and reducing emotional-behavioural difficulties among children.

The programme team participated at the CIFA Regional Symposium & Wofoo 3A Project Final Round Adjudication held in Singapore in 2022. After a keen competition with 8 other finalist teams from Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, the programmme team won the ‘Silver Award’ and ‘My Favourite Project’ award, receiving positive feedback from participants from different regions in Asia.

Participants of this seminar will understand:
1. the developmental significance of parental socialisation of emotion for pre- Schoolers;
2. design of content for facilitating parents to apply skills in daily parenting contexts; and
3. practical implications on development of future parenting programs based on findings of the programme effectiveness study.
