Cheongsam Making and Maker Education: The Perfect Combination of Craftsmanship and Innovative Thinking

Overview

This open lesson will demonstrate how to integrate cheongsam making with maker education. Through teaching strategies such as project-based learning, collaborative learning, and design thinking, students will develop 21st-century skills. The instructional design includes exploring the history and culture of cheongsam, design conceptualisation, handicraft making, and showcasing outcomes. The goal is to enhance students' creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills through hands-on practice while deepening their appreciation and identification with Chinese traditional culture.　

The open lesson will showcase students' creative cheongsam designs and craftsmanship through a fashion show format. We will showcase their creative cheongsam designs and share their design concepts and reflections on the making process. Their works will demonstrate the inheritance and innovation of traditional craftsmanship and their leadership and teamwork skills developed through collaborative learning. Moreover, teachers will share their reflections on the course implementation and optimisation strategies, providing references for other educators.


Participants of this open lesson will understand:
1. how to integrate traditional handicrafts with modern educational concepts to develop innovative courses that are cross-disciplinary and cross-domain;
2. how to increase students' learning interest and 21st-century skills through authentic situations and hands-on practice; and
