AI-based Retinal Image Analysis for the Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Global Developmental Delay (GDD) in Pre-schoolers

Well-being & Inclusive Learning Theatre

Overview

There are around 317 million young people with developmental disabilities worldwide, including 168 million with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This team has developed an AI-based Automatic Retinal Image Analysis (ARIA) to detect the risks of ASD and Global Developmental Delay (GDD) for children aged 2 to 6 with over 90% accuracy. The team plans to apply ARIA to the general population as a screening tool for ASD and GDD. By identifying children at high risk for ASD and GDD using ARIA, we can contribute to evidence-based interventions, including PIEP, JASPER, ESDM, SCERTS, etc. and use ARIA to monitor their progress.

To achieve the goal of transforming children with special needs to children with special talents, ARIA will be used as a monitoring tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions for ASD and GDD and try to find the most effective personalised interventions that build confidence and nurture their talents.

The interim analysis indicates that the technology’s accuracy exceeds 90%. This technology has the honour of receiving a Special Prize from the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) and a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2024.

Participants of this seminar will understand:
• Children with special needs can be nurtured to become children with special talents; and
• Early and effective personalised interventions are crucial for the development of children with special needs
