Teaching English Language Writing in Primary Schools with GenAI Technologies

Overview

This open lesson demonstration focuses on the integration of Image Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and the blended learning approach in teaching English writing, bringing the benefits of the advancement in GenAI into classrooms. It is based on an authentic teaching unit previously adapted from a local primary school with school-based curriculum materials. Speakers will showcase instructions for students and share samples of their work.

In this open lesson, participants will be able to observe the utilisation of GenAI as a tool in helping students complete the writing of a short descriptive text, which is often considered difficult by ESL / EFL learners. Participating teachers will experience the students’ perspectives in creating images with GenAI, which assists students in writing more detailed and creative texts. Furthermore, the utilisation of image GenAI will be complemented by a multitude of blended learning activities, including pre-writing tutorial videos, e-portfolio sharing, and interactive video sharing.

The speakers believe the integration of GenAI and blended learning contributes to a promising future in Hong Kong language education, building a dynamic and supportive learning environment which equips students for the challenges of the twenty-first century.
