Using AIR technology to Enhance Learning Abilities of Students with Special Educational Needs

Well-being & Inclusive Learning Theatre

Overview

Students with special educational needs have various developmental disabilities, such as low muscle tone and poor balance, which make them dislike activities that require hand-eye coordination, such as writing and ball-playing. In response to the needs of SEN students, this school has developed a new game-based occupational therapy e-learning tool to train their perceptual abilities through game-based occupational therapy activities.
The speakers’ school is a leader in the field of information technology in education. Having independently developed various school-based IT teaching curricula, such as the ‘Primary School Artificial Intelligence Learning Curriculum’ and the ‘Primary School Science Curriculum’, their teachers have relatively mature skills in using new technologies in teaching, and students have many opportunities and experiences to learn with technology. More importantly, parents support the school's introduction of new technologies to enhance learning effectiveness.
From the beginning of the system design, the school has incorporated different concepts and identified key areas for practical implementation. Using the AIR+OT technology system, they have collected data and feedback from teachers and students, optimising the system's performance.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality technologies are used to assess the motor performance of students (SEN) and, in line with the school and occupational therapy direction, train students in coordination and balance abilities.
Using a gamified format has been found to increase the interest and engagement of SEN students, and they will even initiate the activities during recess. After collecting the data, AI will analyse the effectiveness of SEN student training. It can transmit the data and recommendations to parents, schools, and occupational therapists for follow-up.
Through the system's online platform, the school's system administrator sets up different accounts different groups who receive relevant data concerned, such as students and parents being informed about their exercise activities and the general situation of other students in the school. Teachers and occupational therapists can access information about individual students and the overall situation, and can also receive alerts for any unusual data. This enables them to follow up more effectively on the individual circumstances of each student.
This school uses AIR+OT technologies to assess students' motor performance (SEN) and trains students' coordination and balance abilities in accordance with the school and occupational therapy direction. Using a gamified format has been found to increase the interest and engagement of SEN students, and they will even initiate the activities during recess.
To understand the impact of the AIR+OT technology system on different students, the school arranged for students with various learning characteristics to trial the system, allowing for a fair comparison and making the research more targeted. After collecting the data, AI will analyse the effectiveness of SEN student training. It can transmit the data and recommendations to parents, schools, and occupational therapists for follow-up.
Participants will gain insights into:
• What is the AIR+OT (A.I. + A.R.) Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality Technology System.?
• How can the system engage the students in different activities?
