Interactive AI builds Thinking

21st Century Classroom

Overview

In response to the goal of improving students' computational thinking, one of the speaker’s school primary foci in ICT is to utilise AI as a tool to enhance students' computational thinking skills. A 12-session school-based AI curriculum including three main themes: AI introduction (The concepts of Turing Test, machine learning and dichotomy), Experience AI (Create stories and images by using ChatGPT and AI art generator) and AI Application (Use of Huskylens and Micro:bit to distinguish members of a group of pop singers). Additionally, the speakers are undertaking a study to examine if this AI curriculum can achieve the goal of improving students' computational thinking. The study is based on the criteria set by Korkmaz et al. (2017) comprises 5 key factors (Creativity, algorithmic thinking, cooperativity, critical thinking and problem solving) including a total of 29 items.

The speakers collect students’ pre- and post- tests, teachers’ questionnaire, lesson observation and qualitative panel discussions for data analysis. Five key factors (creativity, algorithmic thinking, cooperation, critical thinking and problem-solving skills) were identified that canaffect students’ computational thinking ability so as to increase the interactivity of future AI classes.

Participants of this open lesson will understand:
1. teaching practice: Demonstrate real and practical teaching examples of using AI tools to enhance computational thinking in primary schools;
2. curriculum design: Share how to gradually build primary school students’ AI foundation through experience, understand, apply, evaluate and create; and
3. teacher professional development:
Establish a teacher learning community and train teachers to establish and improve new curriculum through engineering design process.
