Promoting Students' Scientific Inquiry and Social Care through the ‘CARES’ Learning

Overview

The theme of this talk primarily discusses how to help students conduct project-based learning through the 'CARES' learning framework. The entire process involves utilising a cross-subject, school-based curriculum and teaching approach. First, it aims to cultivate students' correct attitudes (Attitude). Then, students learn how to effectively use open data and discern its authenticity, thereby deepening their pursuit of truth and enhancing their critical thinking abilities. This approach fosters students' spirit of scientific inquiry (Research). At the same time, through experiential learning, students gain knowledge beyond the classroom. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate student achievement (Student Achievement) and develop a sense of caring for society (CARES).

Through this learning framework, this school’s students have increased their awareness of vulnerable groups in society. For example, they have devised various methods to help the elderly learn how to use technology to address daily needs. Additionally, they have deepened their understanding of global warming and climate justice through project-based learning on the use of solar energy. On the other hand, the awards won by students in competitions demonstrate their improvement in scientific inquiry skills and presentation abilities.

Participants of this seminar will understand how to integrate a culture of care and values into students' learning when guiding them in project-based learning in the future.
